Historically, Uganda was not as well-known as some of its neighboring countries in the specialty coffee realm and was largely a producer of Robusta coffee for commodity consumption. Today, Arabica production accounts for about 20% of Uganda's annual coffee exports and over the the past 15 years there has been a shift towards quality-focused growing. The country now produces some of the most unique and exciting coffees on the market and we are always excited to have one on our menu.
This natural processed coffee comes from the Rwenzori region in Uganda and is a collection of coffee from small-holder producers in the region. Rwenzori is home to the Rwenzori mountains and lies on the border with DRC. The coffee in the area is grown in fertile, volcanic soil which gives the plants a solid source of nutrients to grow strong, healthy, and capable of producing excellent coffee cherries.
Like with most of our African coffees, this one is roasted on the lighter end of the spectrum with just enough development to bring about the best of its fruity characteristics while maintaining a syrupy, juicy acidity. Distinctly unique in character, the brewed cup is full with hints of grape, cranberry, and caramel.
