This microlot comes from the Gitwe Farmers Cooperative Society which operates the Karinga Factory, located in Kiambu County. There are about 650 contributing members who deliver cherry to the factory, each growing coffee on an average of 1 hectare plots alongside other crops, commonly tea.
The farmers bring their cherry to the factory for sorting and processing as soon as it is picked. Once at the factory, the coffee is depulped then fermented for 12–24 hours before being washed four times and spread on raised beds to dry for 8–13 days. The deliveries are blended and processed into day lots comprising the day's deliveries. Microlots are separated out from the day lots based on cup score and are limited to fewer than 100 bags.
The cooperative has a field committee that assists members by providing various services, including sourcing seeds and seedlings from the Coffee Research Center, giving guidance about fertilizer, and performing farm visits to offer assistance.
This washed coffee from Kenya is a delightful light roast with hints of green grape, persimmon, and honey.
