Our newest offering is a microlot from Mexico grown by Gilberto Barrios Matias & fam on their 13 hectare farm. This coffee was imported by Cafe Imports and we purchased 8 bags for 4.77/lb. The Coffee Commodity price at the time of purchase was 1.03/lb.
Historically, Mexican coffee was viewed as an inexpensive, low-grown blender with cup characteristics including nuttiness, chocolate, and generally mild citric acid. However, today, high-elevation grown Mexican coffee has extremely interesting complex citric and malic acidity, balanced sweetness in the form of chocolate and toffee, and an overall clean cup.
This particular coffee is intensely sweet with a tea-like body & flavor (think rooibos) and has some amazing dried fruit character like fig and cranberry; almost fermented in a way. This coffee is actually the lightest roast we have ever offered; during sample roasting & cupping, we noticed that I could end the roast at a much lower temperature without vegetal flavors being present- which almost never happens. You'll notice much more acidity in this cup compared to other Central American coffees.
