The Aguilera Brothers are 12 siblings who are all second-generation coffee producers. They are well known as Costa Rican coffee producers, having won a fourth-place in the 2007 Cup of Excellence award. The family used their winnings to invest in their own micro-mill which has allowed them to continuously experiment and improve the quality of coffees they produce.
They siblings divide the work of planting and caring for the coffee as well as the milling and processing amongst themselves. They hire 40-100 pickers from the same families every year depending on the size of the harvest.
This coffee was sourced by our head barista, Dominic Ascanio, who gave us this short origin report:
“Earlier this year I had the pleasure of visiting the amazing country of Costa Rica on a trip led by Cafe Imports. I was lucky enough to visit the Aguilera Brothers farm. It felt unlike any others that we visited. As soon as we arrived, we were welcomed in a way that felt more like old friends meeting again, rather than strangers meeting for the first time. They taught us about their mill and we watched as they washed a freshly picked gesha. Next, we went up to the active picking and learned more about how they select cherry. Lastly, we returned back to the farm and spent time getting to know the farmers, pickers, and community over soccer on a field that the local community and schools use as well. I truly believe that the quality of life on the farm is directly linked to the quality of coffee in the cup. I can’t wait to be able to share this coffee with you all!”
Expect syrupy sweetness with hints of cocoa and toasted marshmallow.
